What is does a Laboratory Traveler do?

Curam Staffing Lab Travelers perform laboratory tests on patient specimens in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Microscopy, Coagulation, Microbiology, Virology and Serology to assist in identifying medical disorders and to monitor ongoing patient therapy, prepare specimens to be sent to referral laboratories and report test results as they are returned, obtain blood specimens from patients using standardized capillary or venipuncture procedures, report patient results, documenting quality control and distribution of data. They also check instrument calibration and reagent reactivity by assaying quality control specimens to assure accurate patient test results, evaluate results of patient testing, quality control and survey testing, and take appropriate action to prevent compromises in patient care; while consult with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals concerning requested services and test results.

One of the main drivers of the Lab Division is MLT’s

Medical Laboratory Technician are vital members of the healthcare team who work in clinical laboratories and assist in performing various laboratory tests to help diagnose and monitor patient conditions. Here’s an overview of what MLTs do:

  1. Sample Collection and Preparation: MLTs collect patient samples, such as blood, urine, tissue, or other bodily fluids, as per the laboratory’s protocols. They ensure proper labeling, documentation, and storage of samples to maintain accuracy and traceability.
  2. Laboratory Testing: MLTs perform a wide range of laboratory tests using specialized equipment, instruments, and techniques. These tests may include:
    • Hematology: MLTs analyze blood samples to count and examine blood cells, identify abnormalities, and assess factors related to clotting and bleeding disorders.
    • Clinical Chemistry: MLTs perform chemical analyses on body fluids, such as blood and urine, to measure levels of glucose, cholesterol, electrolytes, enzymes, hormones, and other substances that provide information about organ function and metabolic processes.
    • Microbiology: MLTs culture and identify microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, from patient samples to determine the presence of infections and help guide treatment options.
    • Immunology/Serology: MLTs conduct tests to detect and measure antibodies, antigens, and other immune system components in blood or other body fluids, aiding in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and allergies.
    • Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine: MLTs perform compatibility testing, cross-matching, and other procedures to ensure the safe collection, storage, and transfusion of blood and blood products.
    • Molecular Diagnostics: MLTs use molecular techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleic acid sequencing, to identify genetic abnormalities, infectious agents, and specific mutations associated with diseases.
  3. Quality Control and Assurance: MLTs maintain and monitor quality control measures within the laboratory, ensuring the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results. They perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, and follow established quality control protocols.
  4. Data Analysis and Reporting: MLTs analyze test results, interpret findings, and ensure accurate recording and reporting of data. They enter test results into the laboratory information system, review and verify data for accuracy, and prepare reports for healthcare providers.
  5. Instrument Maintenance and Troubleshooting: MLTs are responsible for the regular maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment. They perform routine checks, calibrations, and basic repairs to ensure proper functioning and reliability of instruments.
  6. Adherence to Safety and Laboratory Standards: MLTs strictly adhere to safety protocols and laboratory standards to maintain a safe working environment and prevent potential hazards or contamination. They follow infection control guidelines, handle hazardous materials appropriately, and maintain cleanliness and sterility in the laboratory.

MLTs work under the supervision of medical technologists, pathologists, or laboratory managers. They play a crucial role in supporting accurate and timely laboratory testing, aiding in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions.
